Researching Cars to Purchase

You have decided to purchase a new vehicle. You are not sure the exact make and model though. How do you decide - do research. Researching cars is easier than ever with the advent of the Internet.

To start your research you first need to decide on what type of vehicle you want to purchase. You do not need to decide on the exact model right away but it is best to figure out the vehicle category. Do you want a sedan, station wagon, sports car, minivan, truck or sports utility vehicle (SUV)?

Once you have decided what classification of vehicle you want to purchase begin your research of what each car manufacturer has to offer. If you have decided on a minivan, investigate what each vehicle maker has to offer. Figure out what style you find most attractive so that you can continue to narrow down your minivan choices to two or three.

Now that you have your choices down to a more manageable number you can get to the serious, in-depth researching. You can begin by starting a document program on your computer. Start a page for each minivan you are considering buying. This is where you will be able to type in the pros and cons you discover as you do your research.

Keeping a list of pros and cons will help you to identify the best vehicle for you and your family. You might also make yourself a separate list of what items you want most in your new minivan. Put on this list the options that are a must have. Next type in the items that you would like to have but do not require to purchase the vehicle. You might also make a list of the items you want to stay away from.

If the purchase of the vehicle is a family decision, make sure that everyone has input. Make the list part of a family meeting. Once the wants and needs, likes and dislikes of new vehicles are discussed it is back to the researching phase.

The Internet is the perfect tool to use in for the minivan research. Go to the manufacturer’s websites of the minivan models you have on your short list. Go through their online “build your own car” to see the options you can get. You can see the exterior and interior color choices available to you.

Once you have an idea of what the manufacturer’s site has to show you move onto other sites that will give you the “lowdown” on the vehicle. This includes sites such run by Edmunds, MSN, etc. They have specific areas for those researching new cars.

One area to research is the specific specifications of the vehicle. You will want to check out what engine choices are available and what information there is on the durability of each. Check out the fuel efficiency. The miles per gallon (mpg) figure should be found. There might even be articles about if the vehicles actually live up to their mpg rating.

There should be a section in which to research the vehicle’s reliability and repair record. This can be very important. You want a vehicle that will be durable with few repairs. If one of the minivans has a bad repair report you might want to cross it off of your list and now focus on your other choices.

The most important research you need to do is on the pricing of the vehicles. You need to check websites to find what invoice price is compare to the manufacturer’s suggested retail price (MSRP).Sites such as Edmunds and MSN’s Carpoint will allow you to see the invoice price for the vehicle plus any option you want to add on. You can add on or take off items to find the right combination for you.

During your research, remember to type into your pro and con documents what information you find out. Now that you have thoroughly researched the specifics of the vehicles hopefully narrowed your three choices down to two or even one. Now you need to do one last search online.

Research online what the insurance costs will be for your vehicle choices. Go to sites such as www.carinsurance.com . You might find out because one has more safety features it will cost you much less to insure. If that is the case it may sway you and allow you to finalize your choice.

Before buying a new car you must do your research. This is the best way in which to get the right vehicle for you and your family while knowing that you had all the knowledge you needed to make the right choice. Once you have your research done print out the pricing you found and head off to the dealership to get yourself a great deal.
