I am buying a used car that is worth only a few hundred dollars. Do I need to insure it?

Every state has financial responsibility laws requiring either insurance or the ability to pay for any damage caused behind the wheel. This page outlines the insurance requirements in your state.

In all but 2 states you will need to insure it. The only 2 states that don't have compulsory insurance laws are New Hampshire and Wisconsin. Many states even require that you present proof of insurance before you register a car.

If you visit our Car Insurance Learning Center you can learn about the different coverage types that are available. An older vehicle that does not have much value isn't typically insured for physical damage (comprehensive and collision coverage), but you still need to carry liability coverage on the vehicle.

Regardless of the insurance you carry, you need to be financially responsible for any damage your vehicle may cause.
