Car Insurance Question  My car was totaled by an 18-wheeler. Their insurance company is offering $6900. This is fair based on Blue Book value. However, when I search on websites within 150 miles of my zip code, like cars are priced between $9500- $11000 (Carmax 'no-haggle' is $10990). I called the claims rep and he gave me the number of a car dealership where he found a like car. I called them and it was a manual, and just had the transmission and clutch replaced. That is not a like car. What can I do?

Your vehicle's value is determined by comparing your vehicle's condition to similar vehicles. This may include input from local auto dealers, private parties or recent sales. Condition, equipment and mileage differences are also taken into consideration. In addition, your insurance company may use a computerized evaluation process to assist them in determining the value of your vehicle.

You should contact the claims adjuster and bring to his attention the differences between your vehicle and the 'like' vehicle he or she is using for comparison purposes. It is possible that he or she is unaware of these differences. You should also present him with the independent research you did online. You are in a better negotiating position with the more information you have.
