Car Insurance Question  I crashed my grandma's car while she was out of the country. I took it without her knowing. I rear ended a car and now the insurance company is charging my grandma over $4,000 for the damages. Is there anything I can do so she doesnt have to pay because she's retired and I'm a full time student so we really can't afford to pay that amount.

As a policyholder, you have certain rights. Every state has laws protecting consumers. Your policy is a legal contract between you and your insurer. It defines your rights and obligations as well as the rights and obligations of the insurance company.

Many insurance policies will be considered null and void if the vehicle was operated by someone whom the insured did not give permission to. It is also possible that a material misrepresentation occurred wherein you might not have been disclosed as a household member or operator of this vehicle. In these cases, the insured would be personally responsible for any injuries or damages caused.

If you have any questions regarding your rights under the policy, talk to your insurance agent or company representative. You may also contact your state insurance department, state attorney general's office, or your state's consumer affairs department.
