Car Insurance Question  I am letting my sister use my car until she gets a new one. The car will remain registered to me but can she use her own car insurance to cover her driving my car?

With most insurance companies your sister would not be able to transfer her insurance coverage to your vehicle because she had no insurable interest in the vehicle. We have one carrier that will allow your sister to purchase coverage on your vehicle as long as you are listed on the policy.

One reader commented, "There are some insurance companies that do not require the registered owner of the vehicle to be the policy holder or be on the policy as a driver. It is recommended that the owner be listed as an Additional Interest, though, in this case. (I am a licensed agent for one of the top 5 car insurance companies)."

With our experience, we recommend that you continue to insure the vehicle on your policy with your sister listed as a driver on the policy. In addition, you should inform your insurance agent that your sister will be driving the car on a regular basis. If your sister wants to buy a policy, we recommend that you are listed on that policy.
