Hi Penny!

Answering your CarInsurance.com questions since 2005

Q

Do you have to own the car to be able to insure it? For example, can a company owned vehicle be insured by an individual, or can a individually owned vehicle have insurance provided to it in the name of a company?

A

It varies from insurance company to insurance company. However, in general, if the vehicle is registered in a name of a company, you will need to purchase a commercial policy.

If the vehicle is registered in an individual's name, you will need to purchase a personal auto policy or a business-use auto policy (depending on how the vehicle is utilized).

I own a company and want to purchase a car under to company name. Can the company car be registered under the company even though I do not have a driver's license? Can the company car be insured under the company name as the driver being an employee who would be the only one driving the car for business purposes?
