My nephew let a friend drive his car to go pick someone up, and he wrecked the car. His friend said he will pay for all the damages. Should my nephew file an insurance claim and at least let his insurance company know what happened? Will his rates go up? His friend doesn't want him to have to pay for anything out of his own pocket. If his friend ends up backing out of paying for the damages, can my nephew still file an insurance claim?

In the event of an accident or loss, your nephew should give notice to his insurance company promptly. This will protect his insurance company's interest. Failure to notify his insurance company may jeopardize his coverage under his policy. Rates do not usually go up if the claim is just reported, and the insurance company does not need to pay a claim. The rates usually go up only when the insurance company has to pay for the claim.

If your nephew's rates increase do the accident, he can get an automobile insurance quote by clicking here.
