Q

I have a really bad driving record. I am 25, and I have totaled three cars. The first two were when I was 16 and 17. The last wreck was a little over two years ago. At that point, I canceled my insurance policy after the insurance company paid for the loss, because I no longer owned a car. I have a lot of concerns about car insurance. I still have three insurance points. If I have my name on a joint title of a car with my fiance, do I have to carry insurance on myself? Or, can my fiance be the only one on it?

A

Yes, if your fiancé's name is on the title along with you (co-owners or joint owners as you said), he should be able to take out a policy for the vehicle. You would not need to have your own policy out on the vehicle. However if you will be driving the vehicle you will need to be listed as a driver on the policy and due to your bad driving record and previous accidents this could indeed cause the rates to be higher.

If you will not be driving the car than some insurance companies will allow you to be excluded from the policy. When you are specifically excluded from the policy you should not be driving the car since you will NOT be covered if you drive the vehicle and are in an accident.

As for your driving record, some insurance companies only look for violations over the last three years. Some insurance companies look at the last five years, and some companies look at the last seven years. Also, insurance companies tend to reward people for prior insurance opposed to punishing people for lack of prior insurance. So you will not get any discount for having continuous coverage.

I have 1 speeding ticket against me and 2 car insurance cancellations. Is there any insurance place that will insure me, even if I have to pay months in advance?
