My daughter is leaving for college. We live in Illinois and she is going to college 75 miles away. Her car is staying at my house and she will not be driving it except on the occasional weekend, over the holidays or during the summer. I am a single parent and the only other driver in the home. My car insurance company has said they cannot reduce her rate, despite the fact that for most of nine months out of the year she will not even have access to the car. Each insurance company has different insurance rules. Some companies do look at mileage driven some don't. It may be possible to list her as an occasional use driver. You also may be able to exclude her off the policy for the time she is in school with proof of her other address. The company is going on the assumption that she has access to the vehicle, that may be why the rates are still high.
