Last night, in the dark, driving around a curve, I hit a cow that was standing in the middle of the road. Who is responsible for the damage to my car?

To find out who is 'at fault' for this accident, you will need to speak to the police. Obviously, it can be the fault of the owner of the cow, because the animal was on the loose. However, if you were driving 'too fast for conditions,' you may be held accountable to some degree. In the meantime, to get your vehicle fixed, you will need to use your 'other than collision' coverage. (This is also known as 'comprehensive' coverage.) This coverage will cover your vehicle up its actual cash value (which takes its depreciation into consideration) minus your deductible. Comprehensive covers damage resulting from events such as fire, theft, vandalism, weather, and windshield or animal-related accidents.
