We paid the past due amount to the old insurance company before getting a policy with a new company - as we couldn't renew the old one unless paid them an ungodly amount up-front. We got a decent rate with the new company, but one month later, we received a letter that stated the discounts were revoked because of the lapse in coverage. If our insurance in the past has lapsed, are we going to be targeted for higher rates?

Some companies offer discounts for transferring your insurance to them with less than seven days lapse in your coverage. Other companies 'tier' their rates. The amount of time of lapse in your coverage helps determine your 'tier.' Try, to think of the discounts for insurance with the prior insurance as rewards for being able to keep your coverage together without lapse. So, as a result, even though your rates are higher due to your lapse in coverage, try not to feel like you are being punished or 'targeted.'
