The first thing you want to do is call the police. They will let you know what their involvement level will be. They may have you fill out a report. After that, you will want to report this to your insurance company - even if there is nothing they do to help you. Some states offer uninsured property damage. This will help cover your property if it is damaged by an uninsured motorist. Also, if you have "collision" coverage, your insurance company will be able to help fix your vehicle up to its "actual cash value" minus the deductible amount you chose. If you do not have uninsured property damage nor "collision" coverage, there is very little else you can do to help you re-coup for the damage to your property.

 | Even w/ uninsured motorist coverage, a hit and run may not be covered. Police may not issue a report if there is no investigational information i.e. a hit and run. Also, even with Collision coverage in effect, it is usually preferable to invoke the uninsured motorist coverage, as the deductible is usually half of the collision deductible, and the report may not have adverse effect on your premiums upon renewal. |
