My husband put comprehensive on my 12 year old Volvo. I hit a deer last night and damaged the front end greatly. Since we know it will cost more money to get the car fixed, than what the car is worth, do I have to report it to my insurance company? We are not filing a claim. I have not filed a police report for fear my insurance company will find out. (I don't want my rates to increase because a deer jumped out of nowhere!) Please help.

The first thing you want to do is call the police. They will let you know what their involvement level will be. They may have you fill out a report. Or, they may not care you hit a deer. After that, you will want to report this to your insurance company - even if there is nothing they do to help you. In general, insurance rates do not go up unless your insurance company pays a claim. Reporting the accident will protect your insurance company's financial interests. Beyond that, to keep your car insurance premiums low, you may want to consider not carrying comprehensive and collision coverage - if your vehicle's value does not warrant it.

We recommend that you buy as much insurance as you can afford.
