I am 19 year old male with my g1. I am about to get my g2 and my parents are telling me, that even if I am not allowed to drive their car, they will have to pay car insurance - because I hold a g2 license. Is this true?

This is most likely true. Most canadian car insurance companies require that you are added as a principal driver instead of an occasional driver once you get your G2 license.

Most insurance companies offer the ability to request an exclusion for household residents. People who are "excluded" are not rated against the policy, nor are they ever covered by the policy.

As a result, they will not be covered if they drive the insured vehicle(s). In order to exclude the licensed household members, some insurance companies require proof that they have there own insurance coverage. Exclusions are not always accepted by companies if they are still required to cover the risk because of complicated state insurance regulation laws.

Regardless, there are some insurance companies who require all licensed household members be listed on the policy as "eligible" to drive. And, all "eligible" drivers are rated against the policy.
