I recently bought an old car to get around in and insured it. I don't know how long it will last or if it will to make it through the winter. My insurance broker told me I could transfer the insurance to another car with no up-front costs or down payment costs. Is this a common procedure? Or, was I lied to?

In general, you can transfer your liability coverage(s), personal injury protection, medical payments, and uninsured motorist coverage(s) from one vehicle to another with no additional cost. There are some exceptions to this rule. You will incur more cost if you go from a vehicle with safety features to a vehicle without safety features. Also, some insurance companies will surcharge your policy if your new vehicle has four wheel drive capability, is a convertible or t-top, or is a high performance vehicle.
