I heard that by not having "non owner" car insurance your rates would significantly increase when purchasing a car in the future. Is this true? (The only reason I bought the non owner car insurance is because I thought I would be penalized when I did decide to buy a car.)

There is no "discount" for starting with a "non owner" policy opposed to purchasing a brand New "owner" policy. If you purchased your "non owner" policy with an insurance company that will allow you to convert it to an "owner" policy when you purchase a vehicle, you will save money. With a "non owner" policy, you have coverages that will transfer to an "owner" policy - usually with no additional cost. As a result, all you will need to do is do an "endorsement" (or purchase/add) the remaining necessary coverages and your vehicle - once you purchase your vehicle. If you have no insurance coverage when you purchase a vehicle, you will need to purchase all of the coverages from "scratch." (There are no coverages that are already being paid to transfer for no additional cost.)

car insurance commentsThough you might not receive a discount by starting with a non-owner policy, your rates could be substantially lower. Thats because insurance companies assume you are driving without insurance and violating state laws when you go for more than 30 days without coverage. That puts you in a high risk category. This might not be true in a big city, but in a rural area of a state such as Tennessee it is definately true. Keep the policy!
