I am 23 years old. I have my learners permit. Do I have to have insurance just to get my license? I still live at home. Will my parents insurance go up if I get a licenese, even though I plan not to be on their policy, and just have a license?

The answer to if you need insurance to get your permanent driver's license will vary from state to state. Many states will not require you to have insurance just to get a license but to find out what your specific state requires check with your local DMV office.

Once you are licensed though your parents will need to let their insurance company know about it. Most insurance companies require their customers to let them know about any licensed driver in the household. Their rates may or may not increase as a result of this. If you truly do not plan on driving any of their vehicles your parents might be able to exclude you from their policy if their insurance company would allow that.

Once you are ready to purchase insurance on your own read over these coverage definitions so you will know what the different types of coverage include.
