My car was driven through flood waters in hurricane Rita. The car stalled out a couple of times then finally broke down a month later. My insurance company has denied my claim stating that a qualified claims rep determined my engine damage is my fault because of no oil. My mechanic is stating something underneath the engine is what caused the damage but he cannot tell for sure without removing the engine which would cost $2k-$3k. My mechanic has said driving through the flood waters may have caused the damage. I asked the insurance company to reopen the case and have a 3rd party mechanic examine the vehicle and they are telling me that I have to pay a mechanic upfront to remove the engine and determine if the damage was flood related. This is a 1996 accord worth about $5k. What can I do in this situation?

It appears you are at an impasse with your insurance company over the reason that the engine no longer operates on your Honda. I would have another mechanic check over the vehicle to see if he can do a diagnosis without pulling the engine. If the engine must be pulled I would definitely get a few other quotes because the quote you received seems very high and possibly the price of a new engine and not just the removing of the used one.

If you cannot afford this work on your own to show proof of the origin of the engine problems to your insurance company you might want to seek legal advice on what actions you can take.
