While driving my daughter-in-laws van this morning through a Minnesota snowstorm, I slid into the parking garage at work and side-swiped a cement pillar, causing damage all along the right side of the vehicle. Without yet being able to examine my auto policy, is it typical that I would be covered under my own policy for collision damages while driving someone else's vehicle or is it only covered under the vehicle owners collision coverage (minus deductible, of course)?

Generally speaking insurance coverage first follows the vehicle and then the driver.

This means the vehicle owner's insurance will be primary and your insurance (as the driver) will be secondary or excess. If the primary insurance is not enough to cover the damages related to the accident the secondary or excess insurance would be used in most cases.

It is lucky that both you and your daughter-in-law have collision so the van should be covered for the damages it received.
