Laws vary in different states but usually a person has more than a week to get an estimate or make a claim against you in a case as you described. We have had auto insurance agencies for over 25 years; one agent remebers a party that filed claims as far as you 2 years after an accident occured. If you want to find out how much the damage is likely to cost you, contact the person and ask them if they can get you the estimate information by a specific date and most likely they will comply. It is doubtful that you can just let the incident go because it would probably force the person to then report it to the police as a hit and run which could get you a ticket and even more worse penalties and require you to get your insurance company involved. If the police would not get involved because of the incident occurring on private property the person could still seek legal advice to either sue you or take you to small claims court depending on your state's laws.
