We have a 20 year old daughter living with us while attending college. We had looked into adding her to our car insurance policy a year ago, but could not do it because her car is in her name. So she bought her own insurance policy. I now have received a note from my insurance agent saying that a recent risk review discovered a driver in our household and that she (the 20 year old) will be added to the policy. I've contacted them and they said I have to fax a copy of her insurance to keep her from being added to ours. Is this a regular auto insurance practice? I've never heard of anything like this before.

Insurance company guidelines vary. It is common practice to review policies every so often. Most insurance companies require all household members to be listed on your policy but in cases such as your daughter having her own insurance should allow her to be excluded from your policy. I would speak to your agent and find out why and how this misunderstanding came about.

Insurance companies are overseen by their state's regulatory body which you can contact if you would like to contact them for more questions.
