Most companies used to require it, but many are starting to change their car insurance underwriting practices. One of our partners requires the named insured of the policy to be the registered owner of the vehicle. Another one of our partners, allows the named insured of the policy to not be the registered vehicle owner. So, simply the answer it that you don't have to own a car to insure it, but some companies will not insure a vehicle unless the person purchasing the policy is the person that owns the vehicle. This is another example of how CarInsurance.com is finding companies to help all customer's car insurance needs.
