Typically car insurance follows the car (owner) first and driver second. This means if you have let a friend borrow your car and they wreck the vehicle it is likely your insurance (as the car owner) will provide coverage to the limits of your policy. Some insurance companies may have rules that do not allow this so speak to your insurance agent and make sure anyone driving your car, with permission, would be covered by your policy. Realize that if a friend did have an accident in your automobile and the claim went through your insurance it is likely your rates would go up. Our Learning Center has term definitions and articles that might help you understand auto insurance more thoroughly.
