Your state laws and insurance company's guidelines will determine if you need to have car insurance when you obtain a learner's permit. Many insurance companies will not charge extra for a person with a learner's permit being added to the policy, though some do. Check with your household's insurance company to see if they require you to be placed on the insurance policy or if they will wait until you are fully licensed.
