Car Insurance Question  I am a permanent resident of Massachusetts. That is where my I hold my license, have my permanent address and where my car is registered. I am attending school 9 months of the year out of state and informed my Massachusetts insurer last year. This year, instead of renewing, they sent me a cancellation notice, saying I am not a Massachusetts resident and that the car is permanently garaged in Indiana. Can they do this? I thought I could keep my Massachusetts residency since I am only in Indiana as a student and will return to Mass.

Massachusetts does not have a formal procedure for establishing legal residency in their state. They allow individual public or private agencies to have their own requirement for proof of residency. It appears your insurance company believes that because your car is in another state for most of the year that you are now a resident of Indiana.

Insurance companies vary on how they determine residency and if they will insure you in one state while attending college in another. You should contact your insurance company to get the specifics regarding your cancellation. If you cannot find another MA. auto insurance company to insure you, it is likely that you will have to register your car in Indiana and get an Indiana license so that you can obtain auto insurance in Indiana.
