I let my insurance lapse because of medical bills. My 17 yr old daughter pulled out onto a street and a speeding car hit her broadside and totaled both cars. I paid the medical bills...What will happen to me and her? Will she loose her license or be fined? It was my fault for not paying the insurance, I live on disability income, what can I do? My car was only worth $1500 and his was a newer Mustang.

Driving without insurance in California can result in fines up to $500 and/or the driver's license being suspended. The value of your car and the at-fault's car generally does not factor in. You and your daughter might also be required to comply with the financial responsibility law set forth by California.

The penalties for being uninsured might fall on you, your daughter or both. It is likely that you as a parent signed for your daughter, a minor, to get her license and that document has you accepting financial responsibility for her as a minor. This responsibility requires both the driver and vehicle owner to carry insurance.

If she received a citation, for driving without insurance, call the number listed or DMV to find out more. Then get a California auto insurance quote from us so no one in your household is driving without insurance.
