My son had an accident where no other vehicle is involved. It was raining hard and he skidded and hit a pole and damaged the car. My son is not listed as a driver in my policy and I was not present in the car during the accident. The insurance company sent me a letter of consent to sign, saying that I authorized my son to drive the car at the time of the accident. Should I sign the document? What is the implication of this? I live in California and I have full coverage (collision, comprehensive, medical payments, uninsured motorist, bodily injury, property damage, uninsured property damage) through AAA.

We can not give you advice on it you should or should not sign the letter of consent but hope to explain why the insurance company is likely sending this to you. One reason that AAA auto insurance sent this is to verify that the driver of your car had permission to drive the vehicle at the time of the incident. If the driver did not have permission most insurance companies would not cover the claim.

The other reason for the form might be to find out if you gave permission to the son and also find out if he lives at your residence. If he does and you did not disclose him as a household member with a driver's license that needed to be added to your policy there could be consequences.

Speak with your car insurance agent at AAA to find out more specifics about the form. If you need more help you can get legal advice or contact your state's insurance regulator.
