Car Insurance Question  I am a North Carolina resident. In April of 2003 I received a DWI conviction. Since then I have had a clean driving record except for one prayer for judgment and I understand that this won't count towards my insurance points. As I understand it, the 12 points on my drivers license will be taken off my license after 3 years of a clean driving record, thus reducing my insurance points and my insurance premiums. Is this true? How will my insurance points and rates be affected after 3 years? To throw a wrench in this, my insurance company will renew my policy in March of 2006. Should I jump ship in April and get a new policy from another company understanding that my current company will not take off points until my policy is renewed in March 2007?

You are correct your Prayer for Judgment Continuance (PJC) is a judge-made remedy for some cases in which the judgment is suspended indefinitely thus in most cases it does not result in an increase in auto insurance premiums according to the NC DOT.You are not as lucky with regards to the DWI conviction. It indeed will stay on your North Carolina driver's record for 3 years or more (check with the DOT to find out the exact time period) and during that time it will show up when any insurance company runs your MVR.

One of the best ways to get the best insurance rates for your current situation is to do auto insurance comparison shopping. If your policy is up in April you can start looking now. You can receive a car insurance online quote from us. You can ask your insurance company, along with the insurance companies you comparison shop with, about how your rates should change in 3 years.
