Car Insurance Question  What is the length of time an insurance company holds a driving violation against you? Does there come a time when the violation is so old that it doesnt effect your premium?

Every insurance company has different criteria. In general, a company reviews either:

  • The last 3 years of driving history and/or claims report.
  • The last 5 years of driving history and/or claims report.
  • The last 7 years of driving history and/or claims report.

You can ask the company how long they review your record. Most of our companies review the last 3 years, but some review the last 5. Each company assigns a point-value to your state's driving record incidents. This point-value is unrelated to the state's licensing point system which is used for driving eligibility.

Some companies use an insurance score. An insurance score is the calculated numerical ranking based on a person’s credit history and/or other factors (including driving records, claims history and credit worthiness).
