Car Insurance Question  I have always lived in New York, but I frequently travel between Vermont and NYS for business so I have to rent 2 apartments. Keeping a second car up there instead of renting one is much more practical but insuring two cars in New York, especially if one car is staying in Vermont, isn't practical monetarily. Do any states or insurance companies allow a dual residency of sorts?

Most states require you to register and insure your vehicles in the state in which you reside in or live in for the most months out of the year. I do not know of a way in which to register a car in New York and Vermont both. NYS considers a resident anyone who lives in NYS with the intent to make it their fixed and permanent place to live and have a home, apartment or similar place in NYS for 90 days or more. While Vermont does not term a person who lives in another state and returns to that state on a regular basis to have residency in VT.

For New York state law and more specific answers I would suggest contacting the NYS DMV. They have a site where you can ask questions of them which you can get to through by going to www.nydmv.ny.us/mailpage.htm.

You can get auto insurance rates for either Vermont or New York State by starting a cheap car insurance quote now.
