Car Insurance Question  Can I get insurance in New York City if I have a drivers license from Puerto Rico?

States can vary on their laws and insurance companies may differ on their rules but generally you will need to have your auto insurance from the same state or US territory in which you are licensed. If you are planning on staying in New York City and making it your home New York State requires you to apply for a NYS driver license not more than 30 days after you become a resident.

If you are visiting NYC, the state does recognize valid driver licenses held by other US states and US territories for driving purposes so you will be able to drive in that state. As for insurance you should see if your Puerto Rican auto insurance company will extend coverage to the vehicle you plan to drive while in NYC.

If you are moving to NYC and need New York car insurance we can help you with your needs by starting with a quote now.
