Car Insurance Question  My 20 year old son has a restricted license for 1 year and pays for SR-22 insurance. He was charged with DUI and a small accident with no injuries. He will be joining the Navy and leaving in August so he will not be able to drive for 1 1/2 years. What does he do regarding the insurance and his restricted licenses?

Your son should contact your local department of motor vehicle or the like agency that is requiring him to carry the SR 22 and explain the situation regarding him leaving for the Navy in August. They should be able to explain to him what he needs to do concerning carrying the SR-22 and his restricted license.

If your son has a car he will need to determine what he is going to do with it during his year and a half away in which he will not be driving. If he is not required to continue with his SR22 insurance and does not carry any car insurance many states will require that he turn in his license plates.
