Car Insurance Question  I have points on my license for moving violations in Ohio. Is there a time-frame of good driving or other means that can remove them?

The one way listed by the Ohio BMV to remove points is to take a driving course. This is available if a driver amasses more than 5 but no more than 11 points for traffic violations he or she is eligible for a one time, 2 point credit by completing an approved driving class.

This 2 point credit does not eliminate any convictions from a driver's motor vehicle record and does not erase any prior convictions that an insurance company may take into consideration in premium assessments according to the Ohio Insurance Institute.

Though all infractions remain on the MVR, the points needed for the 12 point suspension are extended by 2 if you take an approved driving course. The 12 point suspension refers to the OH points system which says if you should receive 12 or more points on your Ohio license within a 2 year period, your license can be suspended.

The Ohio State Bar Association discusses changes in the Ohio Point System that have occurred in the last few years. They state that the "look back" period for points assessed or the accumulation of points is 2 years. Once 2 years have passed from the date of conviction, the offense cannot be used in the 2 year points accumulation penalty and thus are negligible.

Insurance companies can still look back 3 years for the purpose of rating for insurance premiums though. The violation information will continue to stay on your driver's abstract, which can be looked at by you and others for at 3 years.

The Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles might allow others ways in which to remove points from your record but you will need to contact the BMV or Dept. of Public Safety to find out what these ways might be. If your current insurance company raises your rates due to your moving violations you can get a cheap car insurance quote here.
