Car Insurance Question  I got a DUI in NJ where I lived in summer 1996 (and served/paid all penalties). Since 1997, I have lived in NY without a car. Now almost ten years after the conviction, I am moving to Illinois where I will need a car and insurance. Can you tell the insurance implications for me in Illinois?

You say you have paid and served all of your penalties for your New Jersey conviction for a DUI so this should include the 3 year insurance surcharge of $1000 as NJ requires. If this is the case it is possible that this nearly 10 year old offense will not affect your auto insurance in Illinois. What might cause higher rates is that you have not been insured for such a long period of time.

In Illinois the mandatory minimum insurance is 20/40/15, meaning $20,000 for injury or death of one person in an accident, $40,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident and $15,000 damage to property of another person. Once you buy your car in IL, we can help you find the car insurance that you need.
