Car Insurance Question  I am the primary on the lien for my vehicle but the car was titled and registered under my girlfriend name because the car was for her. Now I want to Insure the car in my name but my ins. agent is saying I need to be on the title? Is this true for all ins. companies in the state of MA? I know I can get the title amended but it will take 3-4 weeks, time that I do not have.

Most insurance companies will want the insured's name on the title, registration or both. Also in many states the when registering a vehicle, one must show that they have insurance on it, in their name. In some cases insurance companies or the state laws allow for a person who is on the lien, a co-signer, to purchase insurance on the vehicle.

Unfortunately, this not available in all states or by all insurance companies. To find out if you need to for sure get your name on the title so that you can insure the vehicle I would suggest contacting the Massachusetts Division of Insurance because Massachusetts has very strict rules concerning auto insurance. In fact the MA Insurance Commissioner is the one that sets rates for all of the MA auto insurance companies each year.

If the DOI says that it is possible for you to insure a vehicle without being on the title since your name is on the loan, shop around for cheap car insurance quotes starting here.
