Getting USA auto insurance with a foreign license only can be difficult. Most insurance companies will require you to obtain a state license within 30 to 45 days after the inception of your policy in order to allow you to not be canceled. Since you are traveling cross country it is doubtful that you will be acquiring a state's license so if you are renting a car for your trip you might find it easier to obtain insurance through the rental agency. If you are planning on buying a car or shipping over your own car you might be able to find specialty insurance that will cover you but depending on the vehicle it could be costly. You will need to look for an insurance company that offers a USA tourist auto insurance policy or a temporary US automobile insurance program. These policies will likely have an extra surcharge due to you having a foreign license. In the research that we have done the following insurance companies appear to offer the type of insurance you need for your US trip, using your foreign license or international driver permit. They are American International Group (AIG) and GMAC. It will probably depend on your personal information, vehicle type and in what state you are taking out the insurance if they will have the auto insurance available that you need. Our Learning Center has insurance terms and definitions that can help you understand better the US auto insurance system.
