Car Insurance Question  I have a Michigan license and MI insurance coverage for my car. I have relocated to New Jersey. I know that my license has to be changed to NJ within 60 days of getting a permanent address. Once I obtain a NJ license, will I still be able to continue with my MI insurance coverage for my car (until it expires in Oct 2006)?

You typically need to have insurance on your vehicle for the state in which it is registered. Once you have your New Jersey license you will need to register your car in NJ as well. New Jersey requires insurance on vehicles there to be authorized to do business in New Jersey and give you a New Jersey Insurance Identification Card for each vehicle on your policy.

All vehicles registered in NJ require three types of mandatory insurance: liability insurance of 15/30/5, personal injury protection and uninsured motorist. It could be possible that your insurance company is licensed to do business in both Michigan and New Jersey. If that is the case, you can talk to your agent to see if there is a way to convert your current MI policy into a NJ policy. If that is not possible you can start shopping now for a New Jersey car insurance quote.
