Hi Penny!

Answering your CarInsurance.com questions since 2005

Q

If your car door hits and dents the side door of another car while parked, under what coverage is that assessed?

A

If you are the one opening the door and causing the damage to the other vehicle's side door the person's whose vehicle has been dented should file a claim under your property damage liability insurance coverage.

If instead someone had hit and dented your car but you did not know who did it, you would file a claim with your insurance company under physical damage (comprehensive and collision) coverage and have to pay a deductible.

If you open your car door and accidentally hit the car next to you, be a grown up and leave a note for the other driver along with your name, insurance info and a phone number. We have all suffered from this now and again but we all need to grow up and take responsibility for our actions.

My Six year old was getting out of the car and the wind took it out of his control and the door hit the car parked net to us. Is this an act of god? Who pays.

This happened to me 6 weeks ago. I was in a friend's car which was a loaner. What trouble. They are now attempting to sue the car owner.
