Car Insurance Question  I have a Virginia license and got a speeding ticket in Florida for 19 MPH over the speed limit. Would this affect my drivers license and points in VA?

Virginia and Florida are both part of the drivers license compact which allows member states to report tickets received out of state back to the state in which the driver is licensed in. So Florida should report your speeding ticket back to Virginia. At which point the VA DMV asserts that they will assign demerit points to your driving record for traffic convictions incurred in other states.

Going 19 mph over the speed limit is a 4 point offense in both VA and FL so that is likely the amount of demerit points you will receive on your VA driving record. In Virginia, demerit points stay on your record for 2 years from the date that you commit the offense but is not related to the dates that convictions are removed from your record. The demerit points may come off, but the violation still remains a part of your driving record.

As the VA DMV points assessment document points out, insurance companies may assign points on your insurance record; however DMV demerit points are not related to insurance company points. Insurance company points are developed by individual insurance companies. So your insurance could be affected by this out of state ticket as well.
