Illinois law requires all motor vehicles registered and operated in Illinois to be covered by liability insurance. One way this law is enforced is by a person being issued a traffic ticket and convicted in court for operating an uninsured vehicle. If convicted the Secretary of State for IL is informed and the license plates for the vehicle are suspended.
Penalties for first time offenders is a minimum $500 fine for operating an uninsured vehicle. If you are driving a vehicle while the registration is suspended for no insurance you will receive a minimum fine of $1000. Since you were found without insurance for your vehicle, the first thing you should do is obtain insurance for that vehicle.
After your fines or penalties are taken care and when you can show the state proof of insurance and pay a $100 reinstatement fee your registration should be reinstated. If you receive court supervision for the mandatory insurance violation, you will be required to file proof of financial responsibility (SR-22) for one year or face a driver's license suspension.
At the beginning of 2006 there were reports that Illinois was passing a law to make driving without insurance on a vehicle a felony. If that law has passed and gone into affect the penalties might now be much harsher. Either way you need to acquire auto insurance on your vehicle as soon as possible. You can start now by getting a car insurance quote.
The law mentioned above did indeed pass and get signed into law and became effect as of July 1, 2007. Now if an individual is convicted of driving without insurance they will face an automatic three month suspension of their driver’s license and must pay a reinstatement fee of $100 before they can get their license back due to the passing of SB 624.
SB 624 is an amendment to the already existing Illinois Vehicle Code and the Unified Code of Corrections, which penalizes motorists without insurance with a fine of $500 to $1000.So the reinstatement fee is addition to a fine of up to $1,000 that uninsured drivers can also be required to pay. Anyone convicted of driving without insurance while their license is suspended will receive an additional six month suspension.
