Car Insurance Question  I live in North Carolina and received a traffic citation for the "move over law". It is my first traffic violation ever, can you tell me how many insurance points this will be?

As of January 2002, North Carolina made the "move over" law part of General statute 20-157. This G.S. requires motorists, when approaching a parked or standing emergency vehicle with its lights flashing on the shoulder of the highway, to move to a lane not nearest the emergency vehicle if possible or reduce speed.

If cited with violating this NC state statute the result is a $25 fine plus an estimated $100 in court costs, according to the NC DOT website. It is reported that in July 2006 a new move over law will go into affect with increased penalties.

As for insurance points and insurance rates, they are assigned by individual insurance companies that do business within North Carolina. To find out if this citation will raise your rates you can contact your insurance company or your insurance company must file their rates with the NC Department of Insurance so you can contact them for information on your insurance carrier's rating system.
