I live in Maryland and received a ticket for negligent driving. The judge found me guilty but only gave me 1 point. How long will this point stay on my driving record? How long will my insurance look at it?

In Maryland, points are assessed to your driving record after you have been convicted of a moving violation, such s negligent driving. So after you were found guilty in court by the judge, your 1 point violation was put on your motor vehicle record (MVR).

According to the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA), after 2 years from the violation date the points are no longer considered "current" points on your driver record. The points remain on your MD driving record until they are officially expunged by the MVA. Expungement allows for the removal of points and violations from a driver record that were placed there after a driver was convicted of violating certain laws, if the motorist meets certain conditions set forth by Maryland Law.

If you do not meet the criteria for automatic expungement, you may request manual expungement again under certain circumstances. Your eligibility for manual expungement depends upon the offense for which you were convicted and the length of time since your last conviction.

The courts, law enforcement officers and other can view your driving records and will see the conviction for the violation for the time period in which it stays on your MVR. As for your insurance company, the MVA states that points on your driving record are considered public information to your insurance company and/or employer for 3 years from the violation date.
