When you are convicted for the first time of a DUI or DWI in New Mexico, typically you will pay stiff fines and court costs and possibly be sentenced to jail time. In addition you normally are ordered to treatment and to install an ignition interlock device on your vehicle. The New Mexico Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) has the authority to revoke your driver's license as well. Any NM DWI conviction will remain on your driving record for 25 years. You were lucky to get the driving while intoxicated offense dropped down to a careless driving violation but since you still were in violation of the Implied Consent Act you still have penalties. If you are able to get the ignition interlock system installed you will likely also be able to receive limited driving privileges even though your full driving privileges are revoked. Due to having a restricted license it might be more difficult to find insurance for your situation but it should be possible. If you are unable to find an auto insurance carrier to help you, contact the NM Insurance Division to help find an insurance company that will insure you.
