I got a speeding violation citation for going 95 is a 65 zone resulting in 5 points on my MD license. I have decided to plead guilty. What are my chances of the points on my license reduced (or removed) if I pay the fine and/or take the Drivers Improvement Program?

In Maryland, when you plead guilty to the violation charge it becomes part of your driving record. The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) may assess points on your license as well. There is also the choice of pleading "guilty with an explanation" and appear for a hearing.

At the hearing you can explain to a judge why you committed the offense and request that your fine and/or points be reduced or waived or ask that you be given probation rather than a conviction. Lowering your fine or points is at the discretion of the judge. There is the possibility that your fine could be increased, up to a maximum of $500.

If you plead guilty and pay the fine outright, the points will probably stand. When you receive 5 points on your MD license, the licensee is required to attend a point system conference (PSC). If the driver improvement program is court assigned as part of the PSC it would be unlikely that points would be reduced or removed from your driving record.

You might see if there is a point reduction program in Maryland that allows for you to take traffic or defensive driving school so that you can reduce or remove points from your license.
