I was in an auto accident and my insurance had canceled. I live in Kentucky, what will happen to me? What will the state do? I have insurance now.

There are penalties in Kentucky for driving without insurance. For a first offense you are cited to go to court and can be fined between $500 to $1000 or be imprisoned for not more than 90 days or both.

Your KY motor vehicle registration and license plates can be suspended for one year or until proof of insurance is provided. You also could lose your license for up to a year. The penalties increase for each subsequent violation of not having proof of auto insurance.

It was wise to obtain car insurance now before going to court since this might help your case. There might be penalties beyond the ones listed above since you were involved in an accident while being uninsured.

If you caused the accident you will likely need to contact the other party so that you can reimburse them for the damages caused to their vehicle. Remember that it is important to have continual insurance coverage on your automobile.
