Car Insurance Question  Can I get insured in Chicago, IL while my car is still registered in Indiana, or is it required to have Illinois plates before I can get insured? Also, if something were to happen to my car before then in Chicago, would my insurance in Indiana still cover it?

In Illinois, vehicle owners are not required to show evident of insurance at the time of registration. However, once the vehicle owner signs the registration application, he or she must affirm the vehicle is properly insured. Illinois' mandatory liability insurance limits are 20/40/15.

The state of Illinois has determined that a new resident must change your vehicle registration and order license plates within 30 days of becoming a resident. According to the IL Service for Motorists, you also must surrender your out of state license and pass a vision screening, a written exam and possibly a driving test to receive an IL driver's license. You need to do this within 90 days.

Typically, if your Indiana auto insurance policy is up to date and the insurance company has been informed of your move to another state they will cover your vehicle during the move. Once you have arrived in Illinois you will need to obtain IL auto insurance. You can start now getting an Illinois automobile insurance quote so that you have the required insurance once you arrive in your new state of residence.
