New Jersey does have ways in which licensed NJ drivers can deduct points from their motor vehicle driving record. Up to 3 points can be subtracted from your driving record point total one year after: - your last point violation; or
- your license restoration; or
- your driving record was violation or suspension free for the past year;
- the last time annual safe driving points were subtracted from your record;
- you complete an MVC driver improvement program offered to problem drivers selected by the MVC. You can receive credit only once every 2 years.
Up to 2 points may be subtracted from your point total after: - you complete an MVC approved defensive driving course. Credit is given for one program every five years.
You point total will never go below zero. If you go without traffic or license violations for several consecutive years though you can zero out your points total. For the two points you currently have, you can contact the NJ Motor Vehicle Commission to find an approved traffic school to attend so that 2 points can be taken off of your record.
