You are correct that New Hampshire does not have a mandatory insurance law, so you can drive a vehicle without having insurance on it. If you are involved in an accident though and are uninsured in NH, you can be held responsible for the payment of all damages to the other person's property and the payment of all medical bills arising out of the accident. If you are unable to pay these bills the NH financial responsibility law requires that the NH Division of Motor Vehicles suspend your license until a settlement has been reached. Also, if you are found at fault for the accident and the damages are over $1000 or personal injury occurred the state will require you to carry insurance in the form of an SR-22 certificate. You will need to have the SR-22 for 3 years from the date of the crash. If a court judgment is obtained or restitution agreement is defaulted, insurance will be required beyond the 3 year period until full restoration has been paid. If you do purchase automobile insurance in New Hampshire, the minimum limits available for liability coverage are 25/50/25. For this insurance or to carry a SR-22 start now by getting a NH auto insurance quote.
