Illinois has defined negligent driving as the action committed when a person operates a motor vehicle carelessly or without exercising due care for the safety of others. This recent addition to the IL vehicle code provides that in addition to any penalty imposed, the person's driving privileges shall be suspended for a fixed period of time. The license is suspended for a period of not less than 90 days and not more than one year if the violation results in property damage. The penalties are harsher if personal injury or death resulted from the negligent driving. Moving violations remain on your Illinois driver's record for 4 to 5 years from the date of conviction. If the ticket forms the basis for a suspension or revocation, the information will be carried on your driving record for a minimum of 7 years from the date of reinstatement. Your insurance can be affected by a citation for an offense such as this. Insurance companies vary on their rating system so you will need to ask your insurance company to find out the violation will affect your premium and if so how much. If your premiums do rise, you can get auto insurance comparison quotes here for Illinois.
