Reckless driving is considered a serious offense in both New Jersey and Michigan. According to NJ statute 39:4-96, the offense of reckless driving can lead to large fines, jail time and revocation of driving privileges. The fine is typically between $150 and $200 plus a court surcharge of $250 and 5 points. Speeding in New Jersey over 30 mph over the speed limit is another 5 points violation. Being that you are licensed in Michigan, these points or different points may be transferred to your MI license. Michigan law requires that the same action be taken for tickets received out of state as those received in Michigan, therefore, points and license suspensions may be imposed. In Michigan, reckless driving is a misdemeanor worth 6 points and a speeding ticket for 16 mph over the speed limit is 4 points. So these points might be assessed instead of the NJ points, but either way it totals 10 points. To find out what penalties you will receive in New Jersey try contacting the court listed on your citations. For Michigan, you can contact the Department of State to see what will happen to your MI license if you are convicted in NJ of these violations.
